Ultrasound in Private Podiatry: How to Start, Train, and Grow
The Challenge
The Royal College of Podiatry requires a CASE-accredited PgCert in Medical Ultrasound before podiatrists can independently scan. This is a significant investment — financially and logistically — and many private clinics struggle to justify the commitment without clear evidence of clinical and commercial benefit
The Solution
Almada Podiatry offers a stepwise, mentored pathway to help you explore ultrasound safely, ethically, and profitably
Step One: Trial Integration
Start with one Advanced MSK Session per month.
- Your team identifies suitable patients for ultrasound.
- Almada Podiatry attends and performs scans (typically 4 × 45 min slots).
- Reports are filed with your clinic and shared with patients.
- Your team gains confidence in identifying scan-worthy cases.
- Your patients benefit from enhanced diagnostics — without upfront investment.
- Fee sharing basis so your clinic can earn while investigating the feasibility of ultrasound.
This lets you test ultrasound’s clinical and commercial impact before committing to training or equipment.
Step Two: Training Pathway
If demand grows, we’ll help you assess whether formal training is right for you or a team member.
- Guidance on PgCert options and CASE-accredited routes
- Advice on scan types, patient selection, and workflow integration
- Mentoring during and after training to consolidate skills
Step Three: Ongoing Support
Ultrasound is a skill that thrives on peer review and reflective practice.
We offer:
- Case-based discussions
- Image review and feedback
- Audit support and documentation templates
- Focused training to refine and develop skills
Support is available for podiatrists who have completed PgCert training and want to maintain high standards.
FAQs
Do I need to buy a scanner?
Not initially — we bring everything. If you decide to buy one for training it will be a solid investment based on proven need for this technology in your clinic.
What if I’m not confident identifying scan candidates?
That is all part of the learning. We can support you and your team to identify suitable patients.
Is this compliant with RCPod guidance?
Yes. All scanning is performed by qualified practitioners, and we support CASE-accredited training when you’re ready
What conditions can ultrasound help diagnose in podiatry?
Common uses include plantar fasciopathy, neuromas, tendon pathology, bursitis, joint effusions, and guided injections.
Is ultrasound useful if I already refer out for imaging?
Yes — it can reduce delays, improve diagnostic confidence, and enhance patient engagement.
Can ultrasound replace MRI or X-ray?
Not always — but it’s often the first-line tool for soft tissue and dynamic assessments. Its important to use the correct tool for each job. If an x-ray or MRI would be more suitable we can arrange for self pay patients to be referred for MRI or X-ray.
Can I scan without a PgCert?
No — RCPod guidance requires CASE-accredited PgCert training for independent scanning. However, you can host scanning sessions led by qualified practitioners
What’s the difference between CASE accreditation and other ultrasound courses?
CASE ensures clinical governance, supervised practice, and academic rigour. Short courses may offer CPD but don’t meet RCPod standards for independent scanning
Do you help with PgCert applications or supervised practice?
Yes — we can advise on course selection, supervised scanning opportunities, and portfolio development.
How do I book a trial session?
Just contact us — we’ll help you choose a date, brief your team, and prepare your clinic.
Can I bill patients for the scan?
Yes — we’ll help you structure pricing ethically and transparently, aligned with clinical value.
